Faith & Culture: Living Faithfully with Digital Technology

Dr. Alan Noble

Faith & Culture Alan Nobel

What is the challenge presented by digital technologies?
A battle is being waged for our personal engagement by the smartest and wealthiest humans in the world. With an abundance of technological distraction, we are losing our ability to focus and to discern what is worth our attention, and we are becoming more impulsive and numb through overstimulation (Brett McCracken, The Wisdom Pyramid).

How do we love the world regarding this issue?
“A culture of technological distraction inclines us to look for meaning in preoccupation, novelty, consumer choices, and stimulation. So long as we are moving on to the next thing, we feel that our life has some direction and therefore meaning” (Dr. Alan Noble, Disruptive Witness). With gentleness and respect, we can identify where nonbelievers are seeking meaning in technology that can ultimately be found in God alone.

We can make Christ known in our presence online by being slow to anger, promoting peace, and assuming the best of others. Digital technologies also have a way of influencing our lives “off-line” in depression, consumerism, etc. Image bearers look like what they repeatedly look at and reflect the world. Christians have an opportunity to witness that a different life is possible through cultivating relationships, patience, self-control, and enduring love in action.

Join us on Sunday, November 13, for our next Faith & Culture night with special guest, Dr. Alan Noble.
